All I can do is scratch on the violin! Anytime I try to play notes it sounds bad and scratchy. :/

Hi Nate!
Boy do I remember the scratch, and the squeaks, and the A string snapping. (I hope I wasn't the only one who snapped an a string)
One important factor you want to watch out for is how much pressure your putting into the bow. You want to try and find the perfect match of Pressure and Speed. This will take some time like most things on the violin.
Another thing to look out for is how close your bowing to the bridge. If you bow right up next to the bridge you'll get a really scratchy almost cold sound.
That's just my advice. Hopefully someone else will jump in with more.
